Proper Homestay Meal Preparation

A homestay program is designed for tourists or foreign exchange students as an alternative to staying in hotel accommodations or other commercial establishments of the same nature. This feeds to a traveller's desire to immerse in the real culture of a particular country while engaging in the same day-to-day tasks performed by locals. In a homestay, travellers live with a host family for a certain period during his or her trip.

A host family may have to fulfil a variety of tasks to be able to provide for the homestay students' needs. Aside from accommodation, a homestay may cater three meals a day for students. This does not mean, though, that the host uses his or her personal resources to prepare healthful food every day. In most cases, a certain budget is allocated for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

As a homestay host, there are certain things that you will have to keep in mind when it comes to preparing meals. You have to make sure that the students assigned to you are sufficiently fed. Their meal rations should be enough to satisfy their hunger and provide for their nutritional needs. You have to be careful, however, not to pamper them too much. Special treatment is not advised, especially when it comes to food provisions. It can enhance their educational experience if you, as a foster family, allow them to partake of the same courses and recipes that your family normally eats. If possible, expose them to native menus and customary food preparation methods.
